Here at Otis Lane, Liza, and new tutor Viv Aitken, are both obsessed with lino - and once you’ve attended our four week beginner’s course First Impressions we think you will be too! And, if you’re hungry for more, we have a whole menu of further offerings. Each of our workshops and courses focusses on different skills and techniques. Take one for fun, or combine several courses to develop and diversify your printmaking.
All our courses are held at beautiful Otis Lane Creative Studio, near Palmerston North. Classes are limited to small groups of 4-10 people, and are usually on Thursday evening (though other times may be available). absolute beginners
Fundamentals of lino printing
first impressions

Start here.
This affordable, four-week course covers the fundamentals of relief printmaking with lino. Designed for absolute beginners and those with some experience who wish to refresh or deepen their skills. Suitable for participants 12 years and over. Price includes all materials: lino, tools, inks, paper etc.
At the end of these hands-on workshops, you will have produced your own original artwork and you’ll have developed the confidence, skills and techniques to continue printing at home, or progress to our other lino courses (see below)

cELEBRATORY impressions
Block printing

1 day workshop. Using the magic of block printing, design and carve your own stamps and create beautiful, cost-effective wrap, gift bags and tags for a special celebration. All tools, inks and materials supplied. Includes afternoon tea. BYO lunch. Suitable for 10 years and older (children must be supported by a paying adult).

colourful impressions
Working with colour

Four week course A further exploration of lino printing with a focus on ways to introduce colour: including multiblock printing, jigsaw printing, ombre rolling. An ideal follow up from the First Impressions course. Participants will create a series of images based around a place or story of importance to them.

Repeat impressions
Block printing

Four week course. A comprehensive exploration of the joys of block printing. Learn how to design, carve and print repeat patterns on paper and fabric. Learn to play with negative space and develop skills in creating mesmerising tessellating patterns. The course will include mini challenges along the way, with a special project at the end. Participants will have lots of creative freedom within the challenges and project. Suitable for 12 years and up (children must be supported by a paying adult).

Tailored impressions
Me to a tee

Three Saturdays. On the first day you’ll be supported to create a unique T-shirt design based on the meaning of your name (or something else of personal significance to you). The second session will be about carving and test printing. Then, finally you’ll get the chance to print your T shirt/s or other fabric items using washable fabric dye. Suitable for participants 12 years and up who have completed First Impressions and are able to do carving at home.
Cost: To be confirmed. Most materials supplied. BYO T shirts or other fabric items for printing on.

INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED
Mastering your skills in lino printing
contrasting impressions
Carving into light

Four week course focussed on the skills required to create dynamic large-scale lino blocks. Drawing on techniques used by professional printmakers, we will explore ways to represent light, movement, texture and tone through variations in carving. This course will include an opportunity to use a professional printing press to produce single-colour artworks.
Suitable for participants 12 years and up who have mastered basic carving and printing techniques.

Mastering your skills in lino printing
LAYERED impressions
Reduction printing

Four to six-week course exploring the incredible, mind-bending process of reduction lino. Learn how to create an edition of prints by printing and carving in progressive layers on the same block. Embrace the challenge of how to register prints for accurate overprinting. Suitable for participants 12 years and up who have mastered basic carving and printing techniques.
